‘Seerat’ is an Arabic word. It means — inter alia — nature, disposition, purity of character and inner qualities. The word ‘seerat’ is also used for the works describing the life and qualities of the last Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Seerat- writing in Urdu had begun quite early and some of such works written in the 19th century have rhetorical qualities too. This article introduces four books on seerat written in 19th century, with their merits and shortcomings. These four books are: Marghoob-ul-Quloob by Shah Rauf Ahmed, Fawaid-e-Badriya by Mufti Muhammad Sibghatullah Madrasi, Tawareekh-e-Habeeb-e- Ilaha by Mufti Inayat Ahmed Kakorvi and Ash-shamamat-ul- Amber Min Muallid-ul-Khair-ul-Bariyya by Nawab Siddiq Hasan Khan.
