Abstract
Modern Urdu poetry has been influenced by all the modern literary movements and trends. It was through the effort of Muhammad Hussain Azad and Altaf Hussain Hali that ushered in a new era of modern Urdu poetry. The new course taken by modern Urdu poetry was paved with the poetic works of women poets as well and some of the women poets of Urdu contributed a lot towards lending the modern trends and contemporary sensitivity to Urdu poetry. These trends include Modernism, symbolism, surrealism and feminism. This article evaluates the modern trends in Urdu poetry with reference to modern women poets such as Ada Jafri, Zehra Nigah, Fehmeeda Riaz, Kishwer Naheed, Parveen Shakir, Azra Abbas, Shahida Hasan and Yasmeen Hameed.
