Abstract

The magical realism or magic realism is a genre of fiction. Also known as marvellous fiction, it intermixes realism with fantasy and magical or highly imaginative ideas to create a surreal or realistic picture of the world around, going through one upheaval after other, giving the impression of a magic spell instead of the real world. The technique was popularised in fiction by some of the Latin American fiction writers. This article introduces the concept of the genre, its technique and some of the prominent writers whose works have influenced the growth of this genre. It also evaluates and criticises some aspects of such works.
