Abstract
Kaleemuddin Ahmed was a critic more famous for his severe criticism on Urdu ghazal than his other works, though his other works too merit an appreciation. This paper quotes from Kaleemuddin Ahmed what he has said against Urdu ghazal first. The author then critically assesses his point of view and says that most of what Kaleemuddin Ahmed has written on Urdu ghazal is based on his study and appreciation of western literature and he has evaluated Urdu ghazal by the measures and standards of western literary theories and values. With quotations from some well-known scholars of Urdu, the author has reassessed whatever has been written about Urdu ghazal, its importance and its cultural and literary value against the backdrop of the environs in which ghazal developed and prospered. The author feels that every literary work has a cultural background and it should be assessed and appreciated with those standards in mind.
