Abstract

It is a fact that literature mirrors life but the description of animals is rarely found in it despite the reality that animals have been the close partners of human beings since ages. The Social animal continued forgetting animals after he bade farewell to his primitive age. Western fiction is rich in the tradition of animal characterization but Urdu short story has only a few names with Sayed Rafique Hussain succeeded. His short stories’ collection Aaena-e-Hairat has a number of animal characters. This article deals with the introduction, research and criticism of his short stories. Unlike the Western and few Urdu writers, he has not depicted his animal characters symbolically but many of his animal characters symbolize human figures.
