Abstract

Linguistics in Urdu is a relatively new discipline compared to other scientific and social sciences. Its studies started with Urdu lexicography and grammar writing, however, in Urdu language, there is still a tendency of neglect about it. In the Urdu departments of Pakistani universities and other educational institutions, the weight of literature is heavier than that of linguistics, due to which language and its scientific studies and teaching are either not given full attention or this knowledge is limited to one or two subjects. Furthermore, there are issues like establishment of separate departments of linguistics or lack of formal education as well as lack of linguists, ignorance of linguistics of university teachers and unavailability of linguistic terms and materials in Urdu language, Which are becoming an obstacle not only in the teaching of linguistics but also in the development of Urdu language. In view of these points, the following article addresses the present situation of the teaching of linguistics in Urdu departments of Pakistani universities and discusses the possibilities and problems with their workable solutions, so that in the light of the results obtained and recommendations, teaching and learning of linguistics based on modern principles can be practiced.
