Abstract

This article is about the lexical features of Urdu-English dictionary named A Dictionary Hindustani And English, its unique position compared to the lexical works of other orientalist lexicographers. The great lexicography compiled by William Yates. Despite its unique features, it is a neglected dictionary that has not been discussed by Urdu lexicographers until now. The linguistic and lexical insight that the eminent lexicographer has demonstrated even before the formal advent of linguistics is revealed, needs to be brought to the fore. Compared to the Urdu-English Orientalist lexicographers of his time, he had better lexical insight and spelling, mastery of Arabic and extensive knowledge of Arabic-Urdu, familiarity with the Karkhandari language and placement of its words in the right place. Moreover, his nature of avoiding clichéd Hindi and Sanskrit words is impressive. The balance between registration of public and literary words is discussed in particular.
