Abstract
This paper is focuses on Urdu Poetry (Shayri) in West Bengal. To know when Urdu Poetry came into vogue in Bengal, it is very important to study the ancient Pothi literature of the Bengali language. Urdu poetry holds a significant place in West Bengal culture & as well as all over India, with a rich history dating back centuries, where poets often used the language to express deep emotions, philosophical ideas, and even critique societal issues, with prominent figures like Mir Amman, Nassakh, Insha Allah Khan Insha,Shams Kalkattwi,Wahshat Kalkattwi, Jameel Mazhari, Parvez Shahdi,Alqama Shibli etc. being particularly revered; today, Urdu poetry is still widely appreciated and performed in Mushairas (poetic recitals) across West Bengal, particularly in the form of Ghazals and Nazms.
