Abstract
The theme of disability in Urdu short fiction represents a highly significant, sensitive, and intellectually profound social dimension. It not only portrays physical or mental conditions but also highlights the associated societal attitudes, psychological struggles, superstitions, and emotional deprivations. In Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi’s short story Masi Gul Bano, disability is not merely depicted as a medical or physical issue but is explored as a complex social and psychological reality. The protagonist, Gul Bano, is a disabled woman whose condition resulting from illness and a traumatic incident affects not only her body but also her thoughts, emotions, and social identity. The societal response ranging from mockery and exclusion to superstition further deepens her psychological wounds. The character of Tajjo further illustrates that disability is not always physical; emotional and mental disturbances can also constitute a form of disability. In traditional societies, such conditions are often misinterpreted as signs of possession by supernatural forces such as jinn or spirits. Through this narrative, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi emphasizes that disability should not be viewed solely through a medical lens, but also in the context of human dignity, equality, and social inclusion. The story powerfully conveys that disabled individuals are not objects of pity, but rather deserve respect and acceptance. It underscores the responsibility of a civilized society to acknowledge their emotions, aspirations, and rights. This story stands as a profound literary, social, and psychological exploration at the intersection of fiction and human experience.
