Abstract

This research critically examines the adaptation of Naseem Hijazi’s historical novel Khak aur Khoon into film, with specific focus on the treatment of character development and narrative structure. The study identifies and analyzes significant deviations introduced in the cinematic version, including the omission, compression, and flattening of key figures such as Khair Din, Daud, Mohan Singh, Master Ji, Pir Wilayat Ali Shah, Akhtar, Majid, and Asmat. Through a comparative textual and visual analysis, the paper demonstrates how these alterations diminish the richness of the original narrative by reducing psychological depth, cultural realism, and socio-political nuance. The research highlights that the novel’s depiction of village humor, childhood innocence, religious faith, and historical struggle is inadequately conveyed on screen, resulting in weakened emotional resonance and diminished audience engagement. Methodologically, the study employs close reading of the source text alongside scene-level comparison of the film, thereby foregrounding the consequences of selective adaptation strategies. It concludes that faithful representation of character interiors and socio-historical contexts is vital for preserving authenticity and audience empathy in literary adaptations. The findings contribute to adaptation studies in South Asian literature and cinema, underscoring the centrality of character fidelity in cultural memory construction.
