Urdu Orthography: Issues and Analyses

Urdu orthography has many issues and some of them are very old. The problem arises when the same words are spelt differently by different writers and scholars. The author has taken up such issues with a reference to Rasheed Hasan Khan’s famous book ‘Urdu imla’ and some other older works. Additionally, the works by some scholars on Urdu orthography that have been published recently have also come under the discussion and the writer has suggested, with logical and academic reasoning, the adoption of certain spellings of certain Urdu words and dropping or phasing out of some of the disputed spellings. The article takes into account the works of many scholars and the approach is inclusive, not exclusive.
