An Urdu Syllabus for Primary Classes taught before the Independence: a Literary, Linguistic and Cultural Perspective

Abstract

Before the Independence in 1947, the Urdu syllabi taught at schools had some peculiar views and certain literary and linguistic aspects. Also, the writers of these textbooks had their own world view. The writer in this article has presented the excerpts from a few textbooks of Urdu taught at different schools in pre-independence era with critical comments and analysis. The article takes into account the pedagogical needs of the students with reference to cultural and political perspective. A critical review of these books with a special emphasis on linguistic, grammatical and stylistic aspects and cultural norms is also an aim of the paper.
