Urdu Short Stories of Devendra Satyarthi: A Literary and Social Study

Abstract

Devendra Satyarhti (1908-2003)  was a writer of Urdu and Hindi. He was a folklorist as well and collected thousands of Urdu and Hindi folk songs by wandering around in India for decades. This gave him a deep sense and insight about how people, especially in the rural areas, lived and what their problems and sentiments were. This insight also reflected in his Urdu and Hindi short stories. The writer of this paper regrets that in spite of having written over 100 Urdu short stories, the critics and researchers have largely ignored Satyarhti and he has almost been forgotten. Taking into account Satyarthi’s Urdu short stories, the paper analyses the social milieu that Satyarthi has presented, successfully capturing the essence of life in our rural areas.
