Abstract

Storytelling is one of the basic instincts of mankind. Thousands of years ago when he lived in caves and mountains, tales and stories were parts of their intellectual pursuit. Like any other language, there is a body of diverse folktales available in the Balochi language. Apart from reflecting the enormous imaginative prowess of the bygone storytellers, these folktales also depict the various layers of cultural, linguistic and societal fabric of the ancient times. From these folktales, one can also estimate the intellectual, religious, cultural and moral progress and decline of the Baloch society. Moreover, these stories are examples of life's vicissitudes, truth and reality, sweet and bitter realities of life. Balochi folktales have many aspects. They reiterate on some oldest concepts and ideas which are integral parts of the Baloch code of conduct like honouring one’s words and showing respect to womenfolk. Moreover, the society depicted in these folktales is based on the principles of humanity. Timely dispensation of justice is the crux of this humane society. As is the case with folktales of other languages, other than human beings, Balochi folktales are also replete with giant monsters, jinn, witches, fairies and other supernatural elements.
