Abstract

The journal Jareeda published by the Bureau of Compilation, Composition and Translation at Karachi University, holds a unique and distinguished status. It emerged in 1963 with the aim of publishing glossaries of various sciences and arts terminologies. Later, Jareeda expanded its scope to include the publication of scientific, literary, historical, research, and critical subjects in its objectives. The initial 20 issues of this journal contain highly valuable and informative content, while issues 21 to 37 cover scientific, literary, historical, research, and critical subjects.

To establish Urdu as a medium of education, Major Aftab Hassan (Coordinator of the Bureau of Compilation, Composition and Translation, University of Karachi) proposed to Vice Chancellor Bashir Ahmad Hashmi of University of Karachi to establish an institution within Karachi University that could provide resources for research and teaching in Urdu and compile, standardize, organize, and publish terminologies of all sciences and arts. Major Aftab Hassan's proposal was accepted, and in 1957, the Bureau of Compilation, Composition and Translation was established.
