Abstract

Talmee' or macaronic verses is the art of mixing the words or phrases from one language into the poetic text of another. It is a part of rhetoric art that is considered a very difficult one to practice since it involves the use of more than one language in poetry, with all of its prosodic and linguistic intricacies observed strictly. The article traces the history of this art as practiced in Arabic and Persian. It also presents the samples of versified pieces that represent this art in Urdu poetry by some famous poets, such as Ameer Khusrau, Insha Allah Khan Insha, Nazeer Akberabadi, Allama Iqbal, Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi and some others.
