Abstract

Many of Urdu's orthographic issues are result of erroneous or clumsy styles of calligraphy adopted by different calligraphers in the classical period of Urdu literature, as books were handwritten in those days by the professional calligraphers before printed through lithography. These variant styles of writing a word by calligraphers have caused confusion and certain Urdu words are found with different spellings in classical texts, some of which are still a topic of heated debates among the scholars. This research article examines an old text of Naseem Lakhnavi's divan and discusses the variant spellings of different words resulting in errors and incorrect text.
