Abstraction in Franz Kafka’s Fiction
Keywords
Abstractionism is a Western term that emerged as a trend in the modernist movement. Followers of abstractionism emphasize that the unconscious emotions and desires of man are the source of individual thought and should be expressed in literature. Thomas Mann, George Orwell, James Joyce, Camus, and Franz Kafka have made successful experiments in Western abstract literature. Franz Kafka's stories The Metamorphosis, The Hunter, The Trail, The Castle are excellent examples of abstraction. A unique feature of these stories is the facelessness and blurring of characters and objects, which gives them the form of shadows and their identification is based solely on their moods, emotions and feelings. Kafka's stories are characterized by blurring, vagueness, uncertainty, ambiguity and dreaminess. In fact, he has made the loneliness of the individual and the decline of civilization and morality the subject and has presented pictures of a scattered and chaotic life with abstract expressions and qualities.
